Sky Top Orchard With Kids: Apple Picking Near Greenville, SC (2026 Guide)
If you live in the Upstate, there's a good chance Sky Top Orchard is already on your fall bucket list. Perched on top of a mountain just over the North Carolina line, Sky Top is one of the most popular apple orchards in the region, and it's an easy day trip from Greenville. It has u-pick apples, famous apple cider donuts, big mountain views, and plenty for kids to do between picking and snacking.
Sky Top is a yearly tradition for Matt's family, and this year we went with a big group of cousins and grandparents on Saturday, September 26. It was one of the first cool-ish weekends of the fall, and it felt like everyone in the Upstate had the same idea. This guide covers everything you need to know before you go, including the big change for 2026: timed u-pick tickets you book online. We've also included notes for gluten-free families, since that shapes how we do Sky Top.

What's New in 2026: Book Your U-Pick Tickets Online
This is the biggest thing to know if you've been to Sky Top in past years. Starting in 2026, Sky Top switched to timed u-pick tickets. In previous seasons you could just show up and pick. Now, the only way to guarantee you'll get to pick apples is to book a time slot online before you go.
Here's how it works:
Cost: $30 per ticket, which includes one u-pick bag.
Who it covers: Each bag admits up to 5 pickers (ages 2 and up). Extra pickers are $4 each. Kids under 2 don't count toward your 5.
When tickets drop: New time slots are released every Wednesday at noon. Weekend slots can sell out fast, so set a reminder.
What you're guaranteed: A picking time, not a specific apple variety. What's available depends on what's ripe that day.
Changes and refunds: Tickets are non-refundable. You can change your time slot up to 24 hours before your visit if other slots are open.
Check-in: Everyone gets a wristband, and your whole group needs to arrive and enter the u-pick field together.
Last entry: U-pick closes to new entries one hour before the orchard closes.
Walk-ups: You can try to buy a u-pick bag when you arrive, but only if fruit is still available. On a busy fall weekend, don't count on it.
Good to know: you don't need a ticket just to visit. Entry is still free, and you can enjoy the market, donuts, food, playground, and attractions without one. The timed ticket is only for picking.
We bought our u-pick tickets online before we arrived.

Photo spots, including the yearly "How Tall This Fall" sign

Bringing your own food: we packed a picnic and ate at our car, which kept the day affordable and worked well for our gluten-free needs. There are also picnic tables if you'd rather eat on site.

Jackson gem mining!
What We Did, and What Was Worth It
The hayride was Jackson's favorite. It's a short loop, but it was easily worth $3. Keep an eye out and see how many foxes you can spot! This year we also tried the gem mine for the first time (thanks, Aunt Marie!), and we'd say it's worth it. Jackson loved it and brought his gems home to play with in his kinetic sand. We skipped the apple cannon because the line was very long. Honestly, most lines were long on our visit, so on a busy weekend you'll want to pick one or two paid extras rather than trying to do everything.
Free Ages: Who Gets In Free?
Everyone can visit Sky Top for free. For the paid activities:
Under 2: free on the hayride, and they don't count as one of the 5 pickers on a u-pick bag.
Ages 2 and up: count as pickers on your u-pick bag.
Bee Train: no free ages listed. Every rider is $4, and it's recommended for ages 3 and up.
Food: Cider Donuts and More
Sky Top's apple cider donuts are made fresh every day, and the long weekend lines show how popular they are. Here's what you'll find:
Pie in the Sky Pizza: hand-tossed pizzas and giant pretzels made on site
Hot dogs: on weekends in September and October
Snack Shack: apple cider slushy floats, kettle corn, ice cream, and drinks
Coffee bar (new for 2026): seasonal lattes made with homemade apple syrup or local honey. Coffee bar hours are shorter than the orchard's, so check before you go.
Farm market: already-picked apples, cider, pies, and apple goodies to take home
The food looked delicious, and the lines for donuts and pizza were long on our Saturday visit.
Visiting Sky Top Gluten-Free
Most of the food at Sky Top isn't gluten-free, including the famous cider donuts, so our family doesn't eat much there beyond a fresh apple. Here's how we handle it:
Pack a picnic. We brought our own lunch.
Ask about the cider. Plain apple cider is naturally gluten-free since it's made from apples, but ask staff how theirs is made and handled before drinking it, and be more careful with mixed treats like slushy floats.
Make your own treat at home. Instead of missing out on the donuts, we grabbed a few Granny Smith apples and made a gluten-free apple pie as soon as we got home. Don't forget the vanilla ice cream!
Our Visit: A Busy First-Cool-Weekend Saturday
We visited on Saturday, September 26, one of the first weekends of the season with cooler temperatures, and it was really crowded. Lines were long for nearly everything, from donuts to the apple cannon to the bathrooms.
Even so, the kids had a great time. We stayed a few hours, which was plenty of time to see the whole orchard. Jackson's highlights were the hayride, the gem mine, the playground, and riding on Matt's shoulders to reach the tallest apples in the tree. Many of the trees near the u-pick entrance were already picked clean, so we walked farther into the orchard to fill our bag, and it was worth it.
We arrived around 11 AM, and the parking lot was already almost full. Parking is a bit of a free-for-all among the trees, so take your time and find a safe spot.
Tips for Visiting Sky Top Orchard With Kids
Book u-pick on Wednesday at noon. That's when new slots open, and weekend times go quickly.
Go on a weekday if you can. Sky Top recommends weekdays, especially weekday afternoons, for the lightest crowds. On off-peak days, parking is usually available inside the gates.
On weekends, beat the rush. Peak arrivals are 10 AM to noon, and the busiest stretch is 10 AM to 3 PM. On busy days, attendants direct parking, and overflow parking is across the street. If the lots are full, Sky Top asks that you come back another day.
Walk deeper into the orchard. Trees near the entrance get picked over first, so plan to walk farther in for the best apples.
Leave the stroller and bags at the gate. Strollers, backpacks, and purses aren't allowed in the picking fields. There's stroller parking near the u-pick entrance.
Bring cash as a backup. Cards are accepted with a 2.15% fee, but the rural wifi can be spotty and slow down card machines. There's an ATM on site if you need it.
Expect bathroom lines on busy days. There are two women's bathroom buildings, so the wait moved fairly quickly.
Wear sneakers. The orchard is on a mountain and can be steep in spots, so closed-toe shoes are a plus.
Dress in layers and pack rain gear. It's often cooler on the mountain, and Sky Top is open rain or shine. U-pick may pause during thunderstorms.
Bring water. It can get warm out in the rows, especially early in the season.
Check what's picking before you go. Varieties change weekly, so look at the varieties page on Sky Top's website if you're hoping for a favorite apple.
Bringing the dog? Dogs are welcome on a leash. Keep them out of the Fruit Stand when possible and pick up after them. We'd make sure your dog is comfortable with crowds and lots of kids before bringing them.

Is Sky Top Orchard Worth It?
Yes, especially with kids. Even with the crowds and lines, it's worth the trip. The kids didn't notice the crowds at all and had a great time picking apples, riding the hayride, gem mining, and running around the free playground. It isn't far from Greenville, so it makes an easy fall day trip. And since entry is free, you can skip the paid extras entirely and still have a good day.
Where to Stay Near Sky Top Orchard
Sky Top is an easy day trip for us since we live nearby, but if you're coming from out of town, you have two good options: stay in the Hendersonville and Flat Rock area to be close to the orchard, or stay in downtown Greenville and make a fall weekend of it. We haven't stayed at these hotels ourselves, so we chose well-reviewed, family-friendly options with lots of guest reviews. Ratings are from Travelocity as of October 2026.
Near Sky Top (Hendersonville and Flat Rock)
Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Hendersonville Flat Rock: Rated 9.6 out of 10 across 620 reviews, with high marks for cleanliness. It has an indoor pool, free breakfast, and suites that sleep up to 5. It's in Flat Rock, so it's a short drive to Sky Top.
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hendersonville SE – Flat Rock: Rated 9.2 out of 10 across 692 reviews. It's right near the Fairfield, so it's just as close to Sky Top, with free breakfast and suites that sleep up to 4. Its only pool is outdoors and closes after September, so it's a better pick for families who don't need a pool.
Home2 Suites by Hilton Hendersonville: Rated 9.6 out of 10 across 237 reviews. It opened in 2024 and has an indoor pool, free breakfast, and suites with kitchenettes, which is handy for families who need to prep their own food (like us gluten-free folks). It's also dog-friendly for a fee.
Highland Lake Inn & Resort: Rated 9.2 out of 10 across 239 reviews. This Flat Rock resort feels more like a mountain getaway, with a game room, free bike rentals, tennis and pickleball, trails, and lake activities like canoeing and kayaking. The outdoor pool is seasonal and closes in early September, so don't count on it for a fall trip.
In Greenville
Embassy Suites by Hilton Greenville Downtown Riverplace: Rated 9.2 out of 10 across 1,000 reviews. It's about a one-minute walk from Falls Park and has suites with separate living areas, free cooked-to-order breakfast, and an indoor pool. Up to two kids 12 and under stay free with existing bedding.
Residence Inn by Marriott Greenville Downtown: Rated 9.4 out of 10 across 310 reviews. Every suite has a full kitchen, which is great for gluten-free families, and the largest sleep up to 8. Breakfast is free, and it's about a 7-minute walk to Falls Park. The outdoor pool is only open May through September.
Hampton Inn & Suites Greenville Downtown RiverPlace: Rated 9.4 out of 10 across 1,001 reviews, with free breakfast and suite options, right next to Falls Park. The trade-off is that it has no pool.
Make a Weekend of It: Fall in Downtown Greenville
If you're staying in Greenville, downtown is one of the best parts of a fall visit, and the weather in October is hard to beat.
Falls Park on the Reedy: Walk the Liberty Bridge over the waterfall, especially pretty once the leaves turn.
Mice on Main: Kids love hunting for the small bronze mice hidden along Main Street.
Swamp Rabbit Trail: Rent bikes and ride the paved trail, an easy, flat ride for families.
Unity Park: A newer park with a big playground and wide green space, just west of downtown.
Greenville Zoo and the Children's Museum of the Upstate: Both are easy kid-friendly stops downtown.
Fall for Greenville: This huge downtown food and music festival usually happens in mid-October (October 8 to 11 in 2026). It's a fun, busy weekend, but expect road closures, big crowds, and higher hotel prices, so book early or plan around it.
Denver Downs: For more fall farm fun, this Anderson farm has a corn maze and pumpkin patch about 45 minutes from Greenville. Read more: [Denver Downs post link]
