Bonaire vs. Aruba With Kids: Which Island Is Right for Your Family?

We've spent a week in Bonaire and taken a separate family trip to Aruba, so this isn't a guess. It's a real comparison. If you're deciding between these two ABC islands for your next family trip, here's how they actually stack up. We visited Bonaire over Christmas and Aruba in June, so we've seen both the winter high season and the summer.

Weather: It’s a Wash

Here’s the good news if you’re trying to pick based on weather alone: you don’t really need to. Both islands sit outside the main Atlantic hurricane belt, in the southern Caribbean alongside Curaçao, so a direct hurricane hit is genuinely rare on either one. Neither island has a meaningful weather advantage over the other.

Both islands are among the driest in the Caribbean, with warm, sunny weather and swimmable water year-round.

Planning a Christmas Trip?

December is high season on both islands, so book early no matter which one you choose. Late December falls at the tail end of the short rainy season, but showers usually pass quickly. We spent Christmas week in Bonaire, and it threatened rain a few times but never actually rained. For what the holidays there were really like, see What Christmas Week in Bonaire Is Actually Like (With Kids).

The Real Difference: Beach vs. Snorkeling

We’ve been to both, and they’re different trips wearing similar Caribbean-island packaging.

Aruba has the classic postcard beaches: wide, soft sand and calm water, built for lounging. If your family's idea of a vacation is beach chairs, a good book, and kids building sandcastles, Aruba wins here clearly.

We stayed at the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino, right on Palm Beach.

Bonaire doesn’t have beaches on that same level. What it has instead is the snorkeling: we saw far more marine life and far greater diversity snorkeling in Bonaire than we did in Aruba, where honestly, we didn’t see much at all. If your family wants an active, in-the-water trip built around exploring reefs and marine life, Bonaire is the clear pick.

If you're leaning Bonaire, bring your own snorkel gear. Proper fit matters for kids, and you'll be in the water every day. Here's exactly what Jackson used:

Which One Should Your Family Choose?

  • Choose Aruba if: you want a classic beach vacation, your kids are happiest building sandcastles and swimming in calm, shallow water, or you want an easier, lower-logistics trip that doesn’t require much planning around specific activities.

  • Choose Bonaire if: your family genuinely enjoys snorkeling, or is willing to try it, and you want an active, structured trip built around the water rather than a lay-by-the-pool week. It’s a better fit for kids who are already comfortable in open water.

    • Plan on renting a car or truck, since Bonaire's snorkel sites are spread along the coast. We picked ours up at our resort, but you can also compare Bonaire rental cars.

  • Can’t decide? You don’t have to. We loved both, and they’re close enough geographically that some families do both islands on the same trip (you'll fly between them on a short island-hopper flight), or treat them as two different kinds of vacations for two different years.

    • Whichever island you pick, an eSIM makes it easy to have data the moment you land.

Our Honest Take

Neither island is the "wrong" choice, they’re just answering different questions. We’d send a family that wants to relax to Aruba, and a family that wants to explore to Bonaire. For us, at this stage with a kid who genuinely loves being in the water, Bonaire was the better fit, but we’d go back to Aruba without hesitation too, just for a different kind of trip.
