Where to Stay in Nara With Kids: 5 Family-Friendly Hotels

Young boy with deer in Nara Park, Japan

Nara's famous deer were the highlight of our visit.

We visited Nara as a day trip during our two weeks in Japan, and if we had more time, we would have stayed the night. Nara is small, walkable and full of space for kids to run, and staying over means you can see the deer and temples in the early morning or evening, when the day-trip crowds are gone.

We did not stay in Nara ourselves, so we researched the family-friendly options carefully for this post. Every hotel below is well reviewed by hundreds of guests, rated 4 out of 5 or higher (or 8 out of 10 or higher), and has something that makes it work for families. If you are still planning, our What We Spent in Nara post and our Our 14-Day Japan Itinerary are good places to start.

Is It Worth Staying Overnight in Nara?

Most visitors see Nara as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka, and that is what we did. It works, but it is a full day with kids, and you spend a lot of it on trains and in the busiest hours at the park.

Staying the night lets you slow down. You can walk to Nara Park first thing in the morning, take a midday break at the hotel, and head back out in the evening when it is calmer. If your family likes a slower pace, or you want a ryokan or hot spring experience, one night in Nara is worth it.

The Best Area to Stay in Nara With Kids

Nara is compact, so you cannot go far wrong. The main choice is whether you want to be closer to the park and deer, or closer to the JR trains.

  • Near Nara Park and Kintetsu-Nara Station: the best area for most families. You can walk to the deer, Todai-ji and the other big sights, and Kintetsu-Nara Station has direct trains to Kyoto and Osaka.

  • Near JR Nara Station: a little farther from the park, but easy if you are arriving by JR or carrying luggage. There are more restaurants and shops right around the station.

  • The quieter west side: home to the JW Marriott. It is farther from the sights, but the hotel runs a shuttle to the stations, and it has the pool.

Our 5 Picks for Where to Stay in Nara With Kids

Near Nara Park and Kintetsu-Nara Station

1. Kasuga Hotel

If you want a Japanese ryokan experience close to the deer, this is our top pick. Kasuga Hotel is about a 2-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station and about a 3-minute walk from Nara Park, so getting to the sights is easy with little legs.

  • Why families like it: you can choose a traditional tatami room with futon bedding or a Western-style room, and family rooms are available.

  • Hot spring baths: indoor public baths plus an open-air bath. The bath closes during the middle of the day (roughly 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), so plan to use it in the evening or early morning.

  • Good to know: children of all ages are welcome, but kids 6 and up are charged as adults, and cribs and extra beds are not available.

Rating: 9.0/10 from 749 reviews on KAYAK (as of October 18, 2026).

2. Nara Hotel

Nara Hotel is a historic hotel that guests love for its old-world charm. It sits about 0.6 miles from Nara Park, with Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha Shrine each under a mile away.

  • Why families like it: reviewers describe the rooms in the main building as spacious with high ceilings, which helps when three or more of you are sharing.

  • On site: two restaurants, a bar and a cafe, plus free parking and a free shuttle.

  • Good to know: some guests find rooms in the newer wing more dated than the main building, so it is worth checking which building your room is in. Ask the hotel about cribs and bed setup for kids before you book.

Rating: 9.0/10 from 1,594 reviews on KAYAK (as of October 18, 2026).

Near JR Nara Station

3. Hotel Nikko Nara

Hotel Nikko Nara is the easy choice if you are arriving by JR. It is about a 1-minute walk from JR Nara Station, and Nara Park is roughly a 12-minute walk.

  • Why families like it: this is the best pick for bigger families. Large Twin rooms for 3 or 4 people can sleep up to 5 or 6 guests using twin beds plus sofa beds.

  • Kids stay free: one child per adult, up to age 5, can stay free using the existing beds.

  • On site: three restaurants, a breakfast buffet guests praise, and an indoor public bath.

  • Good to know: cribs are not available, and some guests note the hotel is older and showing its age in places.

Rating: 8.3/10 from 5,090 reviews on KAYAK (as of October 18, 2026).

4. Onyado Nono Nara Natural Hot Spring

Onyado Nono is the most-reviewed hotel on this list, with thousands of guests rating it highly. It is about 200 meters from JR Nara Station and has natural hot spring baths and a sauna, so you get an onsen experience in a simpler, modern hotel.

  • Why families like it: guests love the hot spring baths, and reviews mention a free late-night ramen snack, which is a fun treat after a long day of walking.

  • Good to know: some reviewers find the rooms small, and the room types we found were doubles and queens, so check the bed setup works for your family before you book.

Rating: 9.1/10 from 7,476 reviews on KAYAK (as of October 18, 2026).

The Quieter West Side

5. JW Marriott Hotel Nara

If a pool is a must for your kids, the JW Marriott is the one. It is farther from the sights, but it has big rooms and the most family features of any hotel on this list.

  • Why families like it: rooms start around 388 square feet and sleep up to 3, which is large for Japan. Free cribs are available on request, and kids stay free using existing beds.

  • Pool and spa: there is an indoor pool, though guests say it is small and you need to reserve a time. There is also a spa and sauna.

  • Getting around: a hotel shuttle runs to Kintetsu-Nara and JR Nara stations. Guests describe the location as a bit secluded, so plan on the shuttle or a taxi to reach the park.

Rating: 4.6/5 from 385 reviews on Tripadvisor (as of October 18, 2026)

Tips for Booking a Nara Hotel With Kids

  • Check the bed setup for 3 or more. Japanese rooms are often small and set up for two. Look for family rooms, Large Twin rooms or Japanese-style tatami rooms, where futons can fit more people.

  • Read the kids policy. It varies a lot. Some hotels let young kids stay free in existing beds, while some ryokan charge kids 6 and up as adults.

  • Ask about cribs early. Several Nara hotels do not offer them.

  • Check onsen rules. Many hot spring baths have set hours, and some do not allow guests with tattoos.

  • Pick your station. Kintetsu-Nara is closest to the park and the deer; JR Nara is easiest if you are using JR trains.
